Finding the Right LoRaWAN Smoke Detector

Wildfires cause devastation that makes headlines, with the situation continuing to worsen every year. Not only do wildfires cause enormous humanitarian and financial difficulties, but they also have a significant impact on the environment. Moreover, wildfires also destroy the lives of animals and plants and emit more than 30 tons of carbon per hectare. The total land that burns globally adds over 13 billion metric tons of extra carbon to the atmosphere in a year. Generally, wildfires are significant contributors to changes in climate.

Fire can start and spread out quickly in remote regions without anyone noticing. Traditional fire monitoring systems aren’t the best smoke detectors as they depend on ground-based cameras or images from satellites to alert local firefighters whenever they sense smoke or flames. Moreover, these traditional fire monitoring systems often take longer to detect smoke or flames.

The MOKOLoRa LoRaWAN Smoke detector is specially designed for remote real-time monitoring and reporting of the smoke’s status. Besides being ideal for demonstrating amenability, this detector enables the user to identify the deployed alarms not working. It is specially developed to report data packets to the user every 24 hours. The LoRaWAN Smoke detector from MOKOLoRa is the perfect solution for individuals willing to prevent the occurrence of fire within their buildings.

How a LoRaWAN Smoke Detector Works

MOKOLoRa LoRaWAN smoke detector enables real-time monitoring, connectivity, broadcasting, and extra functions such as geo-location. The sensors of a LoRaWAN smoke detection system are embedded with the LoRa technology to collect any data signs of smoke.

After data is collected, the sensors transmit the information to a LoRaWAN gateway. The gateway transfers data to a network server, where an application server analyzes the data collected. After the data is analyzed, the application server notifies property managers or emergency personnel through alerts on smoke sent via mobile devices or computers.

How a LoRaWAN Smoke Detector Works

Applications of LoRaWAN Smoke Detector

The ideal complement to our smart building sensor range is the LoRaWAN smoke detector. It is specially designed with an electro-optical sensor that quickly detects smoke. The sensor makes a sound signal, a light alert, and transmits a message to the user via the LoRa data network whenever it senses smoke near its deployed position.

The most common applications of a LoRaWAN smoke detector are;

• Detecting smoke
• Generating an onside alert when it detects smoke

Sensors

In the fire detection system, there are four major components. They include; sensors, gateways, internet servers, and end-users such as the municipal staff or the fire department. A star network topology is incorporated in the system to link the sensors and the gateways.

Most sensors in a LoRaWAN smoke detector system are evenly spread. They are linked to gateways to be capable of transferring data to the internet servers. The end-user can easily connect the sensors to the existing infrastructure whenever the local telegram providers give an open community LoRaWAN network.

Modules

Modules are used to control or monitor and power a circuit of the LoRaWAN smoke detector. They are essential in smoke detectors that must have a module to operate. The modules cut off the LoRaWAN smoke detector’s power and automatically reset the sensor whenever the fire alarm is cleared. This reset process is completed by temporarily cutting off power directed to the sensor. One module can be interfaced with multiple smoke detectors. Moreover, numerous smoke detectors can be configured to work and operate with the module on the same zone actively.

Gateways

Our gateways rely on the conventional TCP/IP SSL network to link to the network server. The end-users using LoRa or FSK modulation depend on the LoRaWAN protocol to collect data from the gateways. Gateway’s primary role is to collect data from the various specks involved in detecting fire and linking them to the rest of the network. This process observes three different flows;

• Downlink flow – The router waits for the gateway near the device to be available after collecting downlink messages.
• Uplink flow – The router analyzes the uplink content for MAC payload and activations after receiving uplink messages from the gateways.
• Status messages – The router tracks the active gateways using these status messages.

LoRaWAN is the best protocol to use in smoke detectors as it offers a low bit rate, long-range, and consumes low power. The other suitable solutions, i.e., Wi-Fi, ZigBee, and SigFox, are based on short-range technologies; hence they are inadequate for use in long-range environments. Moreover, LoRaWAN has an open protocol, and it permits the deployment of its cheap network, not like SigFox that relies on the operator’s coverage.

Main Features of the LoRa Wireless RF Technology

Main Features of the LoRa Wireless RF Technology
